Artika Tyner is an attorney, educator, writer and community advocate. Tyner is a Clinical Law Fellow at the University of St. Thomas Interprofessional Center for Counseling and Legal Services, Community Justice Project (CJP) Legal Clinic. Tyner supervises and teaches law students to be engineers of social change by utilizing problem-solving approaches, building bridges between communities and policy makers, and creating access to justice. Tyner received her B.A. from Hamline University (Major: English, Certificate: Conflict Studies). Due to her passion for advocating for social and educational policy reform, she decided to pursue graduate studies at the University of St. Thomas. Tyner obtained her Juris Doctor and Masters of Public Policy and Leadership. Tyner was awarded the University of St. Thomas School of Law’s Living the Mission award, Dean’s Award for Teaching, Hamline University’s First Decade Alumni Award, and recognized as one of Minnesota’s 2009 Up and Coming Attorneys. Currently, Tyner is a Doctorate student at the University of St. Thomas, her dissertation topic focuses on training lawyers as transformational leaders. Tyner’s scholarly interests include developing educational pedagogy for teaching social justice lawyering, aiding law students in cultivating their leadership capabilities, and implementing alternative dispute resolution techniques (restorative justice, mediation). Tyner demonstrates her commitment to the furtherance of public service and social justice by volunteering with community mediation organizations, mentoring youth, and advocating for public policy reform.
