Cathy has been trained in Motivational Interviewing to assist students with ambivalence and decision making. She has also received training in the use of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Strong Interest Inventory. Cathy has authored an article on “How to Bring up the Need for Personal Counseling with Law Students,” which was published in the National Association of Legal Career Professionals’ Monthly Bulletin. She taught a class on career counseling in the Master’s of Counseling Psychology Program and has served as a coach for a negotiations class in the School of Law. She recently presented CLE seminars on interviewing millennials to public interest legal employers and moderated a panel on transitioning from working as an attorney in the private to the public sector for the Minnesota Women Lawyers. Cathy is a member of the Minnesota Women Lawyer’s Diversity and Professional Development Committees, the MSBA, the HCBA, the National Association of Legal Career Professionals and the Minnesota Career Legal Professionals. Cathy has also been trained in improvisation at the Dudley Rigg’s Brave New Institute and enjoys script writing for the 1L orientation skit and Career Services orientation video.
Before joining the University as a career counselor for law students, Cathy worked as an attorney in a variety of capacities. Cathy worked as an Assistant Attorney General at the Minnesota AGO in consumer enforcement and represented the Minnesota Departments of Commerce and Public Safety. While at the Minnesota Attorney General's Office, Cathy also presented a CLE seminar on first amendment regulation of commercial speech and successfully argued a federal preemption case before the United States Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. She also worked in employment law and business and commercial litigation at Fredrikson & Byron, P.A. She was the Notes Editor for the Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies at Indiana University.
