Reverend Larry J. Snyder, vice president for mission at the University of St. Thomas, will offer insights into how we might celebrate the Pope Francis' Extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy and take advantage of the opportunity for the great amnesty that it affords. Father Snyder is a 1987 alumnus who led Catholic Charities USA, one of the largest social service agencies in the United States, for nine years before becoming the vice president for mission at St. Thomas on Feb. 1, 2015.

In light of Pope Francis' announcement of an Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, set to begin Dec. 8, 2015, the topics of this year's Hot Topics: Cool Talk series will investigate the role of mercy in law and public policy on issues such as: amnesty, federal narcotics sentence reforms, physician-assisted suicide (mercy killing), hate-speech and forgiveness, marriage and divorce, and debt relief.

The Jubilee Year has always constituted an opportunity for great amnesty, which is intended to include the many people who, despite deserving punishment, have become conscious of the injustice they worked and sincerely wish to re-enter society and make their honest contribution to it.
