Six months have passed since Minnesota’s new expungement laws went into effect and it is time to talk about the pitfalls of the new laws and issues remaining in how Minnesota deals with citizens who have a criminal record. Judge William Koch and Referee Richard Trachy handle all expungement petitions filed in Hennepin County and will speak about the technical side of the changes and the pitfalls they have seen in first six months under the new laws. Joshua Esmay, Director of Public Policy and Advocacy for the Council on Crime and Justice, was a vocal advocate for the recent changes. He will speak about the realities of crime and criminal expungement in Minnesota, providing insight on how race and gender relate to criminal expungement and the negative impact of a citizen’s criminal record on obtaining housing and work.
