Time is running out to apply for a MJF Summer Clerkship! The application deadline is Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. This webpage is designed to help you navigate the application process as well as give you as many helpful tips as possible. November 11, 18, and 22

Request Access to William Mitchell Symplicity: Each Friday in November Dan Winterlin will send a list of names to William Mitchell requesting access to their Symplicity system. Login access will be sent to students every Friday, between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

October and November 

Schedule an Appointment: CPD is available to conduct mock interviews and review your resume, and cover letters. Email lawcareers@stthomas.edu to set up an appointment with Monica or Kendra. 

Friday, November 1, 2013 - December 3, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. (noon)

Application Period: Students upload application materials to the William Mitchell College of Law Symplicity site and apply to selected employers. More information will be released toward the end of October. 

Tuesday, December 3 at 12:00 p.m. (noon)

MJF Donation: A $20.00 donation must be paid to the UST Law MJF office. 

January 21 - January 24, 2014

Notice of Interviews:  Applicants will receive notice of interviews.

January 28 - January 30, 2014

Interviews take place at William Mitchell

February 3 - February 7, 2014

What are MJF Summer Clerkships?

MJF Summer Clerkships are summer clerkships with public interest, government and non-profit agencies from the Twin Cities Metro and Greater Minnesota. Follow this link to the Minnesota Justice Foundation 2014 Summer Clerkship website for the complete list of participating agencies. 

How do I know if I am eligible to apply for MJF Summer Clerkships?

You are eligible if you are:

  • Enrolled in a Minnesota law school,
  • In any semester but your final semester of your academic program, and
  • A 2013-2014 MJF student member.
    • The $20 donation must be paid to the UST-MJF Student Chapter, by Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. $15.00 of this donation is given to the UST-MJF Student Chapter. Both cash and check are accepted. There are multiple ways to give your donation.
      • Write your check and give it direction to Megan Volk in MSL 246
      • Drop of your check for Megan in MSL 124, the student services suite.
    • Checks should be made out to UST-MJF Student Chapter. Students who pay with cash should put it in an envelope with their name on the front. 

How are applicants picked to interview?

Each agency will pick their own applicants. Each agency is required to interview applicants from each law school, including at least one first year student.  

What will my time commitment be during the summer?

You will be required to complete 400 hours of legal service between the last day of the spring semester and the first day of the fall semester; generally, 40 hours a week for 10 weeks. 

How do I apply for MJF Summer Clerkships?

Applications will be uploaded into the William Mitchell Symplicity system. To gain access to their Symplicity system, email lawcareers@stthomas.edu with the following information.

  • First Name:
  • Last Name:
  • Anticipated Graduation Date:
  • Email Address:

On November 8, 15, and 22, between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., William Mitchell will send out Symplicity login information to the students who requested access during the week. The deadline to apply for MJF Summer Clerkships is 12:00 p.m. December 3, 2013.

Once you have access to the William Mitchell Symplicity system you will be able to apply for up to 10 of the 20 agencies by submitting a resume and cover letter. 

IMPORTANT: You may NOT include GPA or class rank for law school or undergraduate school or any other academic honors such as dean’s list, scholarship receipt, etc.  (You may include a scholarship awarded on a basis other than grades, but please discuss it with Megan Volk first.)

What is the deadline to request access to the host school's Symplicity system?

The deadline to request access to the William Mitchell Symplicity system is Friday, November 22 at 12:00 p.m.

The deadline to apply for MJF Clerkships is Tuesday, December 2 at 12:00 p.m.

Are MJF Clerkships paid clerkships?

No, these clerkships are unpaid, but MJF Clerks who receive their clerkship though this program are provided a stipend of $4,500 if they are clerking in the Metro and $5,000 if they are clerking in Greater Minnesota.

Below are resources for you to use during the MJF Summer Clerkship application process.  Take a close look at these, they have been put together with help from past MJF Clerks and past MJF Clerkship Agencies.  

These materials are stored in the Symplicity Document Library.  In order to access them from the website, you will need to login to Symplicity first or you will get an "unathorized" error.

All of these documents can also be viewed in the Symplicity Document Library. In the Document Library select "MJF Summer Clerkship Handouts" or "Public Interest/Government" from the "type" menu.
