Here are a list of frequently asked questions regarding MJF clerkships and the application process in general. For more in-depth information please refer to the 2013 MJF Summer Clerkship Student Application Instructions or email Dan Winterlin at daniel.winterlin@stthomas.edu.
MJF Summer Clerkships are summer clerkships with public interest, government and non-profit agencies from the Twin Cities Metro and Greater Minnesota.
You are eligible if you are:
Each agency will pick their own applicants, but they are required to pick multiple applicants from each law school as well as interview at least one first year student.
You will be required to complete 400 hours of legal service between the last day of the spring semester and the first day of the fall semester; generally, 40 hours a week for 10 weeks.
You apply on the University of Minnesota Symplicity website. To gain access to their Symplicity system you need to email lawcareers@stthomas.edu with the following information.
First Name:
Last Name:
Year in School:
Email Address:
Every Friday the U of M will send out Symplicity login information to the students who requested access during the week.
Once you have access to the U of M Symplicity system you will be able to apply for up to 10 of the 18 agencies by submitting your resume and cover letter. IMPORTANT: You may NOT include GPA or class rank for law school or undergraduate school or any other academic honors such as dean’s list, scholarship receipt, etc. (You may include a scholarship awarded on a basis other than grades, but please discuss it with Megan Volk first.)
The deadline to request access to the U of M Symplicity system is Tuesday, January 29 at 4:00 pm, but the deadline to apply for MJF Clerkships ends on Tuesday, January 29 at 5:00 pm!
We strongly suggest you email lawcareers@stthomas.edu with your request by Thursday, January 24. Glitches happen and you need to give yourself enough time to login and make sure you can access everything correctly.
No, these clerkships are unpaid, but MJF Clerks who receive their clerkship though this program are provided a stipend of $4,500 if they are clerking in the Metro and $5,000 if they are clerking in Greater Minnesota.
