Fellowship Timeline

1L Year

Introduction to fellowships - learn what they are; learn which type of fellowship fits with your career goals; learn what to be thinking about during first and second years of law school if you want to line up a fellowship for the summer or post-graduation.  We recommend:

  • Conducting self-assessment of interests, goals and work preferences
  • Working or volunteering during your first summer in a public interest organization
  • Contacting nonprofit organizations and agencies that interest you, arrange visits if possible

2L Year

Start reviewing your resources, identify which type of fellowships you might want to apply for; learn where to find more information about it;  become familiar with deadlines; start thinking about starting the application process.  You will also want to:

  • Review self-assessment
  • Incorporate public interest/pro bono work into academic life clinic, volunteer work
  • Begin researching fellowships
  • Attend CPD programming on public service career opportunities and fellowships
  • Spring semester - Conduct broad, systematic research of fellowship opportunities and nonprofits that fit your interests
  • Summer Seek out former fellows for advice; clarify fellowship requirements and deadlines; for project based fellowship applications identify sponsoring organization and begin drafting project proposal

3L Year

  • Begin in early fall
  • Prepare and submit fellowship applications
  • Check CPD and other sources for new fellowship opportunities
  • Update research and prepare for interviews

Public Interest Work:
ElderCare Rights Alliance / ElderCareRights.org

Working this past summer for ElderCareRights.org I have gained first hand knowledge of the difficult issues facing vulnerable adults. Through interviews done in person and over the phone I have heard the stories of elders in need. I have picked the brains of local mentors and performed independent research to either directly address their issues or to make a proper referral. I have much to learn, but through my great experience these last few months I feel better prepared to meet the needs that will come before the Elder Law Clinic at the University of St. Thomas School of Law.”
