Research Potential Employers


When job searching, it is essential to identify potential target employers. There are many ways to get at that information.  The secret is to be creative.  Think about the many different places where useful information might be located.

1. Look at specialized Databases on Lawyers

Martindale Hubbell is one of the most comprehensive databases of attorneys in private practice and at corporations.

  • www.martindale.com (Private Practice, Corporate Counsel, searchable by practice area)  You can also access a more complete Martindale Hubble directory through the LexisNexis database, by visiting the career center.  This resource will also allow you to search by undergraduate and law school alma maters. Otherwise visit www.martindale.com.
  • www.pslawnet.org (Public interest & Public sector employers)
  • www.lawmoose.com (Attorneys in Minnesota and a few other states.
  • Westlaw - Employer Directory (EMP-DIR), Directory of Corporate Counsel (COPR-DIR)

2. Check the websites and magazines of professional organizations. Many have membership directories that you can search.

  • Each state has its own bar organizations. There are many local bar organizations as well as specialty and multicultural bars.

3. Look at best lawyer lists, best places to work list, and other best lists

4. Look for “experts” and “achievers”

  • Member notes or personal notes sections of the bar, lawyer  publications (on-line, hard copy)
  • Bench & Bar
  • Minnesota Lawyer
  • With Equal Right (MWL’s Magazine)
  • Local Bar publications 
  • Business sections of the Newspaper

5. Research organizations, committees, sections or specialized organizations in areas that interest you.

  • Membership lists (Bar sections, other organizations)
  • Publications
  • Speakers – look at a CLE speaker list
  • People you meet at events
