Reasons for attending UST School of Law:

When looking at law schools, I wanted to stay in Minnesota.  I went to private Catholic school for K-12 and the mission of UST aligned with my beliefs and background.  I also liked that the classes were small.

One way I connected with the Mission of UST Law:

The focus on social justice is important to me.  I want to work in the community with people that are low income and can’t afford an attorney.  I want to make a difference in the system and in people’s individual lives.

My career planning advice:

  • Networking is very important.  Just getting your name out there is the main thing.  You need to introduce yourself to attorneys and judges and follow up with those contacts; go to lunch, send an email, and keep the connections that you make.
  • Try to narrow your field of interest; you’ll have a smaller group of people to focus on networking with.  If you don’t know what you want to do, take a variety of classes to figure it out.  Once you know, start working or volunteering in the practice area you are interested in to get connected in the fie

Favorite volunteer experience:

My favorite experience was working at the Legal Rights Center.  I had the opportunity to go to court every day.  I started in January 2008 and received the MJF clerkship position for the following summer.  I enjoyed the hands-on experience of practicing, interacting with clients, negotiating the deals, and discussing the cases with the judge in chambers.  My supervising attorney gave me the opportunity to just practice and pushed me to step out of my shell.

A little known fact about me:

I have 8 different nationalities – German, French, Canadian French, Dutch, Scottish, Mexican, African American, and Cherokee Indian.
