I chose St. Thomas because I liked what the school was promoting. It was evident to me that UST is taking off and moving up in terms of its ranking and reputation within the legal community. It is exciting to be part of the buzz that a new law school is creating.
I try to think and act ethically in everything that I do. It is important to me that just because I am learning a lot about the law, that I don’t just think of myself, but rather how my knowledge can benefit the community as a whole.
The job search truly is all about networking. Having more contacts in the area you’re interested in puts you in a better position to find a job that you want. Talk to people casually, present yourself as a likeable individual, and don’t discount the connections your classmates may have.
I attended an event at the law school featuring a speaker on predatory lending and approached the speaker after his speech and asked for permission to email him as I was interested in the subject matter. We ended up having lunch a few weeks later and he gave me the name of a contact at the Department of Commerce. I contacted that person not looking for a job, but rather asking if I could ask him some questions about an area in which we had a mutual interest. A few weeks later I received a phone call from the person I contacted asking if I wanted to come in for an interview for an open position. Needless to say, I got the job.
I was a Russian major in college.
