What Can I Do With This Law Degree?  An Introduction to Legal Practice Areas (for 1Ls)

The goals for this workshop are:

  1. To allow us to get to know you and your career goals;
  2. To introduce you to the many different ways you can use this law degree you are earning; and
  3. To equip you with basic knowledge of legal practice areas so you can engage in conversations with your mentors, professors, classmates and lawyers in different practice areas as you start off your new careers.

We will do this through some informative, interactive and reflective exercises.  We hope to have you walk away with an idea of a couple areas of law you are interested in based on what such lawyers do, the skills they use and how to get started in those areas.   Friday, November 6, 2009 from 12:30-1:30pm in MSL 238.  Please RSVP in Symplicity.

What Is Networking and How Do I Do It?  (for all students)

We’ve all heard it before: Networking is the single most effective strategy for getting a job as a law clerk or a lawyer.  But what is it and how do you do it?  In this workshop, we will talk about the wide variety of activities that are considered networking (even though you might not think of them),  we’ll help you figure out what types of activities might best suit your strengths and personality, we might even engage in some exercises so you can practice types of networking - giving you concrete tools you can use the next time you find yourself in one of those cocktail party situations.  This workshop will be student driven, i.e., we will address whatever is the most useful to those who show up!  Thursday, November 12, 2009 from 12:30-1:30pm in MSL 244.  Please RSVP in Symplicity.

If you have ever uttered these phrases, then have we got a workshop for you! It is designed to educate, inform, and enlighten you on the tremendous opportunity a cover letter presents for getting in the door for an interview even when your resume lacks "legal work experience."  Thursday, November 19, 2009 from 12:30-1:30pm in MSL 238.  To get even more out of the workshop, review the cover letter resources on the CPD website first.  Please RSVP in Symplicity.
