Building Bridges and LSAT Preparation Scholarships

The Office of Admissions is committed to creating new opportunities for anyone who has ever considered a legal career.  Recognizing the importance of preparing for the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT), we have partnered with Kaplan Test Preparation to create scholarship opportunities for worthy candidates through the LSAT Preparation and Building Bridges Scholarship programs.

The LSAT Preparation Scholarship provides a free Kaplan LSAT preparation course to successful applicants prior to each December, February and June LSAT administration.  The purpose of this scholarship is to provide access to higher education for those students with financial need who have overcome personal and systemic obstacles to achieve success, while giving back to their communities.

Building Bridges is a summer long program aimed at introducing traditionally underrepresented students to the study of law and providing access to higher education for students who have overcome personal and systemic obstacles to achieve success, while giving back to their communities.  Building Bridges Scholars receive a free Kaplan LSAT Preparation course as well as the opportunity to interact with a cohort group through several informational workshops on the law school admissions process, mini-lectures by law professors and panel discussions with current law school students.  The Building Bridges program prepares applicants for the September/October LSAT administration.

Legal Education Awareness Program

The University of St. Thomas School of Law together with the other Minnesota law schools sponsors a program to encourage high school junior and seniors as well as undergraduate freshman and sophomore students of color to consider a career as a lawyer.  This event rotates amongst the four schools.  The University of St. Thomas hosted the most recent program on February 21, 2008.  Hamline University School of Law will host the 2009 program.

LEAP generally includes a mock law school class; mock trial or appellate hearing; roundtable and panel discussions with current law students from all four law schools and practicing attorneys and judges in the Twin Cities.  Students have the opportunity to ask the panelists questions about their backgrounds and experiences in law school and their careers.  The program also includes separate sessions on undergraduate admissions for high school students and law school admissions for undergraduate students.
