Audubon:
Beno, Mike. "Treaty Troubles.: May 1991: 102-114.

This was the best magazine of all the ones to be listed, although all were extremely helpful for step 9 and understanding the fishing disputes.

Minneapolis Star Tribune :
October 9,1992,1B:1-2.

I found the article to be helpful for Step 9. I also used the book The State of Native America to help supplement by step. The dispute was currents but is one that has been going on for a while. The fishing and hunting dispute is very well known in Minnesota and I found a lot of information on it.

"Don Wedll Interview" October 8, 1995: p. 17c.

This was a really big part of my step 7, it may be too much of my step 7.

Doyle, P. "Spear Vs. Sport: Indian harvest angers anglers." April 21, 1990.
The Nation :
June 19, 1989: 844-848. Oberly, Jim. "Speaingr Fish, Playing Chicken,"
The New Republic :
June 11, 1990: 16-17. Kosova, Weston. "Race Baiting,"

I used these periodicals for step 9. Kosova and Oberly's articles helped the most in giving an understanding of the history and description of the conflict and its racial and economic aspects.

This book was helpgul for Step 5. I used Chapter 2 which is about 30 pages. The information was on the Chippewa and their background and their language (which is important). The book has a lot of sories which would be useful for Step 4.

Saint Paul Pioneer Press Dispatch, The :
Kerr, S. "Wisconsin should take stand on racism, says expert on Indian law." April 23, 1990.
Lijo, L. "Spearfishermen offer strategies to counter violence." February 25, 1990.
Lovejoy, B. "Bush should alter fishing treaty..." April 16, 1990.
Tomson, E. "Lac du Flambeau majority won't trade treaty rights." April 1, 1990.
"Facts about Chippewa treaty rights." April 1, 1990.
"Spearing issue turns nasty in Wisconsin," April 4, 1989: A-1-1.
"Forty AIM members visit Balsam Lake, WI, spearfishing site," May 3, 1989: B-3-1.
"Butternut Lake, WI. spearfishing draw 1,000," May 7, 1989: A-1-1.

These sources were used for step 9. They gave me a clearer understanding of how the Indians were reacting to the white protesters.

Skyway News :
Vol. 21, No. 175.
Sports Illustrated :
May 15, 1989: 16. "Wisconsin Fishing War, The"

This article was excellent for step 9. They gave a good understanding about the hardships and struggles that face the Indian people still today.

Star Tribune :
October 19, 1991, 1A and 13A.
October 20, 1991, 14A
October 25, 1991, commentary (section A)
Vital Speeches :
April 15, 1989: 409-413. Gashbow, Arthur. "State of the Band: We are on the Offensive,"

Gashgow is the Chief Executive of the Mille Lacs Lake Band. His speech deals with the Nelson Allotment Act. It is a very aggressive and emotional speech. An excellent resource for step 8.

"DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 'PRIVILEGE,' 'RIGHT' IS CRUCIAL TO

"TREATY CASE." St. Paul Pioneer Press   2 Dec. 1998.

"HEADLINE: A COOPERATIVE SOLUTION." St. Paul Pioneer Press 3 May 1992.

"HEADLINE: TRADITIONS AS STAKE//TREATY FIGHT TESTS OLD, NEW CLAIMS TO MILLE LACS." St. Paul Pioneer Press   4 Apr. 1993.

"HEADLINE: TREATY CONFLICT AVOIDABLE//RIGHTS TO HALF THE FISH AND GAME IN NORTHERN WISCONSIN WERE WON IN 17-YEAR BATTLE IN COURT SYSTEM." St. Paul Pioneer Press   6 Apr.1993.

"LAKE MILLE LACS QUOTA A DELICATE ISSUE FOR DNR." St. Paul Pioneer Press   2 Feb. 2000.

"KEY FISHING EVENTS IN THE PAST 100 YEARS." St. Paul Pioneer Press   26 Apr. 1999.

"MILLE LACS AREA REACTS WITH MIXTURE OF EMOTIONS." St. Paul Pioneer Press   25 Mar. 1999.

"MILLE LACS TREATY TIMELINE." St. Paul Pioneer Press   27 Apr. 1997.

"150-YEAR-OLD INDIAN PACTS//IF NOTHING ELSE, TREATY FOES TO GET FULL HEARING//THE U.S. SUPREME COURT'S ACCEPTANCE OF THE CASE SUGGESTS AT LEAST SOME JUSTICES PERCEIVE UNRESOLVED LEGAL ISSUES, PERHAPS INVOLVING THE AUTOMONY OF STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS." St. Paul Pioneer Press   10 Jun. 1998.

"TREATY MEANT WHAT IT SAID AND SAID WHAT IT MEANT." St. Paul Pioneer Press   25 Mar. 1999.

"TREATY RULING STANDS//STATE PLANS TO APPEAL HUNTING, FISHING CASE TO U.S. SUPREME COURT." St. Paul Pioneer Press   18 Nov. 1997.

All of the newspaper articles I used aided me because I researched the Lake Mille Lacs hunting and fishing rights dispute.  The dispute lasted almost a decade so it was important to note where in the progression each article fell.  I found all of the articles in an online database, which was convenient because I was able to search for key words that were pertinent to my issue.  All of the articles are originally from the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
