An Evening with Dominic Barter
Friday, October 24, 2008, 7:00 – 8:30 PM
University of
St. Thomas, BEC
Come spend an evening with Dominic to gain an understanding about his
Restorative Justice and Nonviolent Communication work in Brazil. A
presentation will be given describing his NVC RJ Circle work in Brazil.
There will be time for questions and answers.
An Introduction to NVC based Restorative Circles
Saturday, October 25, 2008 – Sunday, October 26, 2008
Timeframe (9:30 – 5:30)
University of St. Thomas BEC
These two days will present the systemic approach developed by Dominic
Barter as he worked with organizations, schools, court systems,
intentional communities and prisons. Applied in the Brazilian Justice
and Education systems, this process makes profound use of Nonviolent
Communication to reconnect those separated by conflict and support them
in reaching agreed action.
Through dynamic exploration of the key concepts that underlie this
model, participants experience the loosening of closed ideas, the
uncovering of human motives behind painful choices and the discovery of
effective strategies to meet pressing needs.
The practice will be grounded in a step-by-step process, and illustrated
through examples - including video of live Restorative Circle sessions.
Application in different social contexts – such as education,
neighborhood and church groups, families and business - will be
explored. Finally, participants will begin exploring the application of
this new resource in their communities.
Dominic Barter has studied the interface between societal and personal
change, and the role of conflict, since the 1980s. Since 2004 he has
worked as consultant and training program director for the Brazilian
Restorative Justice pilot projects, in collaboration with the UN
Development Program, UNESCO, the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of
Education and Special Secretariat for Human Rights. Dominic coordinates
the Restorative Justice Project for the international Center for
Nonviolent Communication.

Two-day Facilitator Immersion Training in NVC based Restorative Circles
Monday, October 27, 2008 – Tuesday, October 28, 2008
Timeframe (9:30 – 5:30)
University of St. Thomas, BEC
The Circle Facilitator brings a unique focus to the gathering and
embodies the promise the Circle holds out - a world in which the needs
of all are held as precious.
The Facilitator contributes a conscious guiding of the process and
corresponding use of language based on commonly held observations and
values - both to model and invite new ways of sharing power.
Their silence, skilled translation of pain expressed through judgment,
witnessing of the balance of power and use of empathic and descriptive
language are transformative elements in the journey a Circle and its
participants take.
This Facilitator Immersion training will involve in depth exploration of
what it means to serve a Restorative process as it unfolds. The
investigation will focus on accompanying the Circle's participants as
they seek security, understanding, dignity, responsibility, learning and
action.
The distinct moments participants may pass through will be studied in
detail from diverse angles - hands-on practice, observation of the
practice of experienced others and mapping of these two. Each day will
offer the chance to live the experience of live circles.
These two days of experiential learning are recommended to all those
wanting to deepen their understanding of the process and support others
in implementing it - whether you are currently serving or planning on
serving as a Facilitator, would like to develop a Restorative Justice
system in your institution or community, or seek insight into
instigating systemic change.
