Movie Dances with Wolves

...this is one of the few movies showing the American Indians in a positive light, I hope that it will help discredit the awful sterotypes of the American Indians of the past and, therefore, help to create an understanding of the Native Americans in our society today!

Video Our Sacred Land

I began reading Native American writings but were not what I was looking for. Decided to write about a video I watched entitled Our Sacred Land. Excellent

Lecture by Greg Page "A History of the Dakota People Prior to European Contact"
Movie Thunderheart

The movie is based on the Pine Ridge reservation in south Dakota where Wounded Knee occurred. I would say that this was a pretty good vicarious experience. It illustrated oppression and abuse of the American Indian and also displayed American Indian culture, mostly spiritual aspects.

Academic American Encyclopedia, vol. 11, Grolier Inc. Danbury, Ct, (1986)

The encyclopedias were especially useful for step 4. Also, they were useful in giving background information that could be researched further using other sources.

This Encyclopedia was probably the most useful because it had so much information that I could use it on more that one step of my paper.

Amnesty International United States of America--Human rights and American Indians November 1992

For my subject, it was vital for step 4, and very helpful for the step 5. Covered mainly the problems of injustice within the criminal justice system.

Armstrong, Viginia Irving. I Have Seen. Sage Books, Swallow Press Inc., Chicago IL. (1971)

This book was very interesting to read. I was unable to finish the whole thing, but it was helpful in the fact that it gives an informed white person's view of the conflict.

Blaustein, Clark, Singler. Human Rights Source Book. Paragon House. New York. 1987
Brown, Dee. Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. Bantam Books, published by arrangement with Holt, Rhinehart & Winston, Inc., New York, NY. (1971)

This book was very useful. It gave facts as well as the emotions that are involved with the conflict. Much of the book deals with the Native American feelings about the situation.

Great poems concerning the issues of injustice in the Aemrican Indian community. Information on the struggle for land, and what led up to current situations.

Cornell, Stephen E. The Return of the Native: American Indian Political Resurgence. Oxford Univeristy Press, New York, 1988
Deloria, Vine. American Indian Policy in the Twentieth Century. Norman, Oklahoma: Univ. of Oklahoma Press, 1985.

This book is interesting and informative. It discussed many aspects of Native American rights. (***)

Deloria, Vine & Little, Clifford. The Nations Within. Pantheon Books, New York, NY (1984).

I did not get a chance to read as much of this book as I would have liked to. What I did get from this book was a sense of the different kinds of tribes there are in the U.S. and how some of them have been treated bu the U.S. government.

Dennis, Henry C. The American Indian 1492-1970 Oceana Publications, Inc. Dobbs Ferry, New York. 1971
Dewing, Rolland Wounded Knee: The Meaning and Significance of the Second Incident. Ivrington Publishers, New York, 1985.
Dooling, D.M. & Jordan-Smith, Paul. [Dooling, Paul?]. I Become [A?] Part Of It. Parabola Books, New York, NY (1989)

This was a neat book because it gave me a good feeling of how the Native Americans view the World (i.e. - their relation to the earth, animals, other people, etc.,).

Facts on File July 15, 1970. pg. 499 & 1973. (p. 166,188,257, & 272).

This book was essential for step 5. I used it to find more information on the AIM seizure of Wounded Knee. (****)

Basically self-explanatory. Facts, Facts, and more Facts. Was useful for step five.

Facts on File June 12, 1981. pg. 399
Farley, Ronnie. Women of the Native Struggle: portraits and testimony of Native American Women. Orion Books, New York, 1993.

Excellent book, with words of wisdom, and opinions of many different Native women. Not particularly helpful for a specific step, but to give an overall view from Native women, It was great.

Hirschfelder, Arlene B. Happily May I Walk: American Indians and Alaska Natives Today. New York, NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1986

This book was great. It was very interesting and easy reading. It was also one of my most current resources. It was especially helpful for step 4. (****)

Prucha, Francis Paul, editor. Documents of United States Indian Policy.1990

Factual book on policies regarding Indians and U.S. government. Easy to understand--summarized excerpts from documents.

Reed, Little Rock, editor. The American Indian in the White Man's Prisons:a story of genocide. Uncompromising Books, Taos, MN, 1993

I wish that I would have found this book earlier, but it will be great to have for future reference. It would have been an excellent added source for step 4, and 5b, as it was put together by an American Indian in the prison system, and gives good ideas for change.

Report of the Minnesota Indian Affairs Commission. Nov. 26,1974.

This report was quite useful, especially for step 8. Although not the most current, it wa helpful in stating specific problems and then some possible solutions. (****)

Schusky, E. The Right to be Indian. San Francisco, Cal.: The Indian Historian Press, Inc., 1970

This book helped to further explain some of the major U.S. government Acts and policies that affected the Native Americans. (***)

Utter, Jack. American Indians: answers to Today's questions. National Wooldands Publishing Company, Lake Ann, Michigan, 1993.

Good straight forward answers to every questions imaginable. Facts, statistics, etc., good over-all source.

Voices from Wounded Knee, 1973, In the Words of the Participants Akwesasne notes, Rooseveltown, 1974.
Waldmen, Carl. Who Was Who in Native American History. 1990

Lists A-Z individuals and gives a blurb about each. Good to have to find out more about a person when their name pops up in other readings.

Warren, William W. History of the Ojibway People. Minnesota Historical Society Press. St. Paul. 1984
Weeks, Philip. Farewell My Nation: the American Indian and the U.S. 1820-1890. 1990

Historical viewpoint from today's generations. Seemed unbiased, good for step 5a. Didn't get to read as much as I would have liked to.

The World Book Encyclopedia, vol. 10. 1991

More information that the other encyclopedias. Covered many areas--no direct justice and peace information.
