Gratitud Hombres de Maiz. Ed. Reverend David Roney. San Lucas Mission Office, 1400 Chancery Drive, New Ulm, MN 56073.

This book is small and written in both Spanish and English. It is in short story form. The book tells the stories of many families in San Lucas of their pride and their struggle. It could be used as a vicarious experience or possible even for a spokesperson.

Harbury, Jennifer. Bridge of Courage, Monroe, Maine, Common Courage Press, 1995. p 1-275

I used this book for my vicarious experience. The book gave very powerful insights into the lives of the companeros. It gave a good introduction to the atrocities experienced by many Guatemalans. The book is set up in about 5 page sections, each section tells a different guerrilla's story. Page after page demonstrates unbelievable injustice.

Maslow, Jonathan Evan. Bird of Life, Bird of Death. New York: Dell, 1986.

Greg Schaffer (Jr) said this book portrays an accurate picture of Guatemala.

Menchu, Rigoberta. I...Rigoberta Menchu--An Indian Woman in Guatemala. (Edited and introduced by Elizabeth Burgos-Debray). London: Verso Editions, 1984.

This book was very interesting and helpful. It helped me to understand many of cultural beliefs and aspects of one of the specific tribes in Guatemala -- the Quiche. It relates family, community, and her personal experiences.

Romero. (Video). John Sacret Young. Dir. John Duigan. a Paulist Picture.

About El Salvador; but conditions in El Salvador are similar enough to Guatemala to make it acceptable as a vicarious experience.

Schotzko, Philip.

Simple Faith: Stories from Guatemala. Missouri: Sheed and Ward, 1989.

Interesting and easy reading. A good book to read for a vicarious experience pertaining to the Indian people. It gives an idea of the basic beliefs held by the people through the experience of one man working with them.

Schwantes, David V. Guatemala: A Cry from the Heart. Mpls MN: Health Initiatives Press, 1990.

Very easy to understand and relate to, wonderful and straightforward story.

Amnesty International Report 19xx.

This gave me a brief background on Guatemala. It started from early times and briefly ran through the history.

Background Notes: U. S. Department of State--19xx. (See also Countries of the World . . . below.)

This reference was spectacular. It gave me oodles of historical information which was clear and detailed. It also was good that it was much more recent than my first encyclopedia finding.

The Country Reports gave me a more vivid picture and more detailded vision on Guatemala's history. It also went into some detail about the repressions that Guatemalans have and are still going through.

Blaustein, Albert P. Independence Documents of the World. p 257.
Barry, Tom. Inside Guatemala. Albuquerque, NM: The Inter-Hemispheric Education Resource Center, 1992.

This book was the most rescent and present book about Guatemala. It dealt with the economy, politics, society, and environment.

Brockett, Charles D. Land, Power, and Poverty: Agrarian Transformation and Political Conflict in Central America. MA: Allen and Unwin, Inc., 1988. (pp. 99-121).

The specific section that I read of this book dealt with land reform in Guatemala since 1944. It was easy reading and interesting, but it mainly emphasized problems of Guatemala in general. I think that these problems escalate and are in essence the problems faced by the Indians. It also talked about the Catholic Church's influence to help create some of these land reform policies.

Buckman, Robert T. "Latin America 1998", Stryker-Post Publications, p 119-125.

This source had good information on later political actions that have occurred in Guatemala including the 1996 peace agreement, an event which the older sources did not address.

Calvert, Peter. Guatemala: A Nation in Turmoil. Colorado: Westview Press, Inc., 1985. (pp. 1-54, parts of 55-100).

A great book for background information on Guatemala in general. Shows the distinction between the Indians and the Ladinos. I also read a section of the social structures set up in Guatemala.

This was an excellent resource to use to understand the political history, including descriptions of the various dictators, and revolutions that occurred. It also gave background information of the people of Guatemala, and the beliefs they hold. But the main thing I used it for was to try to sort out the different leaders and takeovers of the country.

Central American Fact Book. "Central American Chronology, 1900-1985." 312-318.
Chamber's Encyclopedia. vol 6: Free-Hein. pp 626-628.

This encyclopedia was not helpful in finding the information I was pursuing. This was mostly because it was last printed in 1966 and there has been a lot of action since.

Countries of the World and Their Leaders Yearbook 19xx
. (See also Background Notes above) Detroit MI: Gate Research Company. Brief political history of Guatemala.
Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 19xx.

Full of information. Interesting to read about human rights from the perspective of the government.

Encyclopedia Americana International Edition. Danbury CT: Grolier Incorporated, 1987. Vol 13.

Informative, summarizes history, geography.

Encyclopedia Britannica Online

This was a good source to find out information on the ancient Maya civilization.

Encyclopedia of Human Rights. Edward Lawson. New York: Taylor and Francis Inc. 1991. 681-687.

Interesting account of human rights in Guatem,ala--good to compare with Amnesty International.

Facts on File. See the index. Gives one a general idea of what is happening in Guatemala.
Flora L., Jan. Sociology of "Developing Societies" Central America

This was the first book Iread to start off my research. It gave me a look at all the countries in Central America. It took a look at 1970's and 1980's (Guatemala). It also dealt with other countries such as El Salvador, class changes in Nicaragua, and Honduras. At points I found this book to be boring. For the most part I found this book to be interesting.

Books g-o

Illustrated Encyclopedia of Mankind. New York: Marshall Cavendish, 1984. vol 6 pp 738-743.

Brief history of Guatemala in a more humanistic way--tells story of the common people.

This reference was not so helpful as the Background Notes, but it was better than Chamber's Encyclopedia. It was good to look at for my own personal pleasure, but didn't tell me a whole lot about the country or the history. It did show pictures which were neat to look at.

Immerman, Richard H. The CIA In Guatemala: The Foreign Policy of Intervention. University of Texas Press, 1982.

Detailed synopsis of the 1954 coup. Book is available at the Central American Resource Center. Guerrilla and Terrorist Organizations: A World Directory and Bibliography. New York: Macmillan, 1983.

Jay, Alice. Persecution by Proxy New York; Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Center for Human Rights, 1993.

This book detailed the activities of the Civil Patrols and its relation to the army; gave surprising information about civil patrols and human right abuses. Very valuable resource!

Jonas, Susane, and others. Guatemala: Tyranny on Trial. San Francisco CA: Synthesis Publication, 1984.

This book contains personal testimonies of Guatemalans who have been tortured by the Guatemala army. I found this book interesting. I think it would be especially interesting to people who don't believe that there is brutal torture in Guatemala.

Jones, Chester Lloyd. Guatemala Past and Present.
Latin American Perspectives

        Historical information for step 5a.

Molineu, Harold. U. S. Policy Toward Central America. Westview Press, 1986.
North American Congress on Latin America. Guatemala. New York: Naller Press [?], 1974.

This book is a bit old, but it helps a person understand the roots of the problems in Guatemala. It contains photos, poems, and a list of landholders with the land they own. It focuses especially on the roots of the Guerrillas and the intervention of the U. S. government in the country.

Go to books: a-f, g-o, p-z,

Scwantes, V. David. Guatemala: A Cry from the Heart. Minneapolis: Health Initiatives Press, 1990.

An extremely valuable resource. Schwantes tells what he discovered on a trip to Guatemala and his experiences with the people there. Excellent background information, exposes the truth of injustice in Guatemala in personal detail.

Simon, Jean Marie. Guatemala: Eternal Spring, Eternal Tyranny. New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 1987.

This book caught my attention most of all. With his photographs, the author takes us to the world of injustice in Guatemala. I recommend this book especially for people who have a heart that is both strong and gentle, because with his photographs Simon shows and describes how beautiful the country is, how sweet its people, but how horrible the tortures and murders are. This book also helped me with important events and dates.

This is a great book! It is a beautiful description of the people and their struggle and the politics of the life of the Maya. This was very helpful.

Mother Jones :
Dec. 1989, Vol. 14: 14. "Mass Appeal."
