Joining the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ)

SPJ, established in 1909, is the oldest and largest journalism organization in the United States. The University of St. Thomas SPJ chapter has been named Outstanding Chapter in the U.S. Region VI each of the last two years, making it the best college SPJ chapter in Minnesota, Wisconsin and North and South Dakota.

What are the benefits of joining the SPJ?

1. Chapter events, including off-campus field trips to local news organizations and on-campus panel discussions and presentations, let students explore the journalism profession and make connections with work professionals.
2. A subscription to the Quill, a monthly national magazine about journalism, keeps students up to date on trends and events in the field.
3. Chances to attend regional and national conventions with other students and professional journalists offer students additional networking opportunities.
4. Access to SPJ's national career center services, including its national internship directory and its Jobs for Journalists newsletter, informs students of job and internship openings.

Who can join the SPJ?
All print and broadcast journalism students can join SPJ.

How do I join the SPJ?
Complete an application form and return it, with the #38 local and national membership dues, to Professor Boros in OEC 420.  Membership forms are available on the SPJ bulletin board between 322 and 324 OEC.
