The University of St. Thomas

Read below to learn how to declare a major or minor and/or enroll in Media Ethics.

Follow these steps to declare a major or minor in the Journalism & Mass Communication Department:

  1. UST policy stipulates that you may not declare a major or minor until you have completed 48 credits.  Please use Murphy Online to check your transcript and verify that you have completed at least 48 credits.
  2. Prepare a written plan for completing the JOMC major or minor classes in the number of semesters you have left at UST.  To prepare your plan, use a four-year planning sheet
  3. In selecting your courses, read the UST catalog listing of required JOMC major or minor courses.  Don't forget that all JOMC majors must complete a minor or double major in an outside department.  Indicate all major and minor courses on your written plan.
  4. Please note that the capstone core course, JOUR 480: Media Ethics, may only be taken in the final semester before graduation and requires department chair permission before enrollment.
  5. Please note that several courses are offered in one semester only. The following courses are typically offered only in the spring:
  6. JOUR 301: Journalism History
  7. JOUR 302: Literary Journalism
  8. JOUR 311: Persuasion in Writing
  9. JOUR 410: Advanced Reporting
  10. JOUR 420: Graphic Design Studio
  11. JOUR 440: Advanced Advertising Copywriting
  12. JOUR 460: Advanced Broadcast Reporting
  13. The following courses are typically offered only in the fall

  • JOUR 304: Media Law
  • JOUR 370: Magazine Writing
  • Use the sign-up sheet posted beside the department chair's office, 470 OEC, to make an appointment for a 15-minute meeting with Dr. Bunton.  She does not sign major or minor cards until meeting with each student personally.  At that meeting, she will go over your plan of courses and assign you a major field adviser in the department.

Enrolling in Media Ethics

Read this policy before attempting to pre-register for JOUR 480: Media Ethics:

Because it is a capstone seminar, students may not enroll in JOUR 480: Media Ethics until their last semester before graduation.  In the spring semester, five sections of Media Ethics are usually offered.  Students who are graduating in May or summer are eligible for these sections.  In the fall semester, one section of Media Ethics is usually offered.  It is open only to December or January graduates.

Enrollment in JOUR 480 via Murphy Online is possible only after a course permission slip has been obtained and submitted to the registrar's office.  To secure a permission slip for Media Ethics, students must bring a printed copy of their degree evaluations, which will verify their graduation status, to the department chair.  She will review their degree evaluations and issue permission slips, beginning two weeks before pre-registration opens.  Students may use the sign-up sheet posted beside Dr. Bunton's office door (470 OEC) to sign up for a specific time, or to select a walk-in time, in which case they will be served on a first-come, first-served basis.
