The term "blog" at UST means both a type of technology and a web site (blog.stthomas.edu). Blogs offer multiple ways of communicating. One of the most apparent benefits of a blog is it is an easy to use web publishing tool. Blogs are usually seen as a personal publishing outlet for a single author, often in the form of a journal and providing links to other relevant content.
Features of a blog include; easy publishing, chronological comment capability, archiving, search, and security options. As a publishing tool at UST they can also be used to support research, departmental initiatives, project teams, and are also used as a simple content management tool.
Blogs as a news and information broadcast method offers as much, if not more, promise than typical blog use. Through RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, blogs allow users to subscribe to content updates from individual blogs. The RSS feed (which can easily be captured from any blog) can be integrated into any web site.
Blogs at St. Thomas
IRT has implemented the Movable Type blog software for blogging at St. Thomas. Much of what can be done with Movable Type (MT) blog (easy web publishing, now RSS, calendaring and archiving) can be done with other technologies on campus such as Collage and Blackboard. However, other functionality – such as public commentary, subscribe, communication & collaboration between UST and non-UST communities – cannot.
Currently, blogs are established on a case by case basis. Faculty and staff interested in obtaining a blog should contact their Academic Technology Consultant/IRT Consultant or ask to have them to contact contact you via this online form.
