SEP Instructions for Windows

Please use these instructions for installing Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) on your personally owned 32 or 64 bit Windows operating system


SEP is now available for all versions of 32 bit and 64 Windows operating systems, including the production version of Windows 7.

Downloading SEP

  1. Click on the SEP link for your operating system. 
  2. Next read and accept the End User License Agreement (EULA).
  3. Enter your Net ID and password.
  4. In the "File Download" dialog box - choose Save.
  5. In the "Save As" dialog box - select the location you would like to have the file installed on your computer.
  6. When the download is completer click on Close.
  7. After the file has successfully been downloaded, locate the file in the folder in which it was saved on your computer.

Before installing SEP on your personally owned computer, please do the following:

  • Uninstall all previous version of anti-virus software running on your computer.
  • Be sure that you are logged on to your computer with an administrator account.

Installing SEP (Typical)

Uninstall Sophos by going to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and "Remove" any Sophos products in the list.

1.  Download and launch (double-click) the setup.exe. After a few seconds you will see the first sign that it is installing:

2.  Accept the license agreement and click "Next",

3.  Choose "Typical" if you would like to install SEP according to its recommended configuration and settings, click "Next",

4.  Click "Install" to begin the installation.

Once the installation completes, you will see this window:

5.  Click "Finish"

SEP will then beging to update itself, and you will see this window:


It may take a little while for the latest definitions to update, but eventually you should have definitions that are no older than a day or two for both the Antivirus and Antispyware Protection as well as the Proactive Threat Protection.  Once the "LiveUpdate" window closes the SEP installation is complete, although a reboot is required before SEP will be fully functional.

Re-boot your PC!

You will know that SEP is installed and running when you see the SEP shield with a little green dot displaying in your system tray (in most cases on lower right corner of your desktop).


Installing SEP (Custom)

Uninstall Sophos by going to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and "Remove" any Sophos products in the list.

Repeat steps #1-2 from the "Typical" set-up process.

At step #3, choose "Custom".

You may choose not to install certain features of SEP by click in the drop down menu next to the feature and then selecting "This feature will not be available".

You may also choose not to enable SEP's "Auto-Protect" mode, which will allow you to configure how/when SEP will scan your computer.

Once you have selected all the features of SEP that you do not want to install, click "next" and continue the "Typical" installtion process at step #4.
