Suggestions and helpful links to ease the transition to Windows 7

As mentioned in Bulletin Today on Nov. 3, 2009, Windows 7 is now available.

Here are some helpful tips you should know before trying to install Windows 7, whether you are a faculty/staff member who has checked out the install discs from the library, or are a student who has purchased it through Tech Store.

Before the installation

Be sure to back up all of your important data (documents, photos, music, etc.) to a DIFFERENT LOCATION (e.g., an external hard drive, large capacity flash drive, burned to a DVD, etc...).

Installation

  • Install Windows 7 according to Microsoft's documentation.
  • Download the Symantec anti-virus software as soon as you’ve installed Windows.  You can get it from http://www.stthomas.edu/irt/support/security/default.html.
  • Run all Windows updates.
  • Use the Activation Key printed on the DVD to activate Windows.

    NOTE
: There is a 30 day grace period to activate Windows, but we recommend that you activate the software as soon as the installation has been completed.

Please contact Microsoft for any additional support you may need during your installation of Windows 7.
