The University of St. Thomas provides faculty, staff, and students with a UST account when they become part of the St. Thomas community. With this account comes access to an e-mail account provided by the University. E-mail is an important means of communication on campus. E-mail is used for the Bulletin Today, administrative messages, timely updates, messages from professors and other students, as well as mail from family and friends.
Depending on the computer you are using there are several different applications that you can use to access your e-mail account. IRT supports the following Applications:
Outlook Web Access (OWA)
All members of the UST community with a Net ID and password may use OWA to read/send e-mail. OWA may be accessed through an internet browser by visiting http://mail.stthomas.edu. See OWA for additional information on using Outlook Web Access.
Outlook
EntourageThe full version Outlook email client will work for faculty, staff, or student employees logging onto PCs that are joined to the UST domain.
Once logged in, open the Outlook application, your PC will connect to the e-mail server (Exchange) and map your account profile automatically.
Outlook allows you access to your UST e-mail mailbox, Outlook Calendar, Deleted Items folder, Sent Items, etc... Any folders created by individual users inside of his/her mailbox will be preserved on Exchange, and may be accessed on any PC running the full version of Outlook, any Mac running Entourage, or through Outlook Web Access (OWA).
Non UST domain computers may still use the full version Outlook client, although it will need to be mapped using an IMAP connection.
For UST faculty and staff with Macintosh computers, Entourage will need to be mapped on your computer with your NetID account information before it can be used to send/read email. If you need assistance mapping an Entourage account on your Mac, please contact the IRT Tech Desk.
Because Entourage does not share a direct connection to the Exchange server in the same way Outlook does, Entourage users will need to go through the additional step of adding a UST NetID and password to authenticate to Exchange each time Entourage is launched. Entourage users may choose to save the NetID and password after authenticating in order to avoid this step, but will need to update the password settings every 120 days as their NetID passwords change. Saving passwords, as a general rule, is not recommended by IRT as a best practice.
Also, please note that Entourage synchronizes email from Exchange onto the local Mac. This means e-mail can be available to Entourage users even if the Mac is not online or even connected to the UST network, which may be a privacy issue for some users.
Exchange Active Synch (EAS)
EAS synchs Exchange mail, calendar, and contact information directly to your mobile device.
Please visit the mobile devices page for more information regarding EAS, as well as detailed instructions for activating EAS on common mobile types.
Although using an IMAP connection is not recommended by IRT, it can be used to synch Exchange mail items to both third party email clients as well as mobile devices.
Please visit the IMAP connections page for more information regarding IMAP at UST, as well as the necessary configuration settings for IMAP connections.
