1.  What is my email address?

Your email address is a combination of your NetID followed by @stthomas.edu. Net IDs are created using 8 characters – “abcd1234”. Generally, the first 4 characters are the first 4 characters of your last name, the last 4 are random numeric characters.

Note: if you have fewer than 4 characters in your last name numeric characters are added to make a total of 8 characters.

 2.  How do I set up my password?

Visit www.stthomas.edu/new. You will be able to setup your NetID account and your initial password.

3.  How do I change my password?

Visit www.stthomas.edu/netid, login with your NetID and password and select the “Change Password” link.

4.  Can I pick any password I like?

Yes, although your password must be at least 6 characters long, and must include all of the following conditions: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and numbers. Also, your password may not include your first name, last name or username.

Note: Your password will expire every 120 days. You will need to change it to one you have not used previously.

5.  Is my UST password the same as my email password?

Yes.

6.  How much space do I have for my email?

For full version Outlook and Entourage clients, click here for instructions on checking your mailbox size.

Currently, UST Faculty and Staff members are allotted 500MB of data on their UST email mailboxes.  Students are allotted 250MB for email mailboxes.

7.  How can I see the size of my messages, so I can delete or move the largest ones off the server?

In Outlook Web Access, the size of each message is automatically shown on the right-hand side of the message list although you may have to scroll to the right to see it.

8.  What is the difference between a "public" and "private" computer when logging into OWA?

Generally speaking, you would only want to choose "public" when logging onto a public use or lab computer.  Choosing "public" will require the user to authenticate with his/her netID and password more frequently that choosing "private".  Whether you choose "public" or "private", users of OWA will need to authenticate with his/her NetID/password after every time an OWA browser session is closed.

9.  Are there any restrictions on attachments I can send?

Click here for information about file size quotas and attachment restrictions.

10.  I don't want to use my St. Thomas email account. Can I set up a forward?

Click here for information on setting up or canceling email forwarding.

11.  Can I forward my non-UST account to St. Thomas?

No. Many free email vendors prevent this so that they can show you the ads that pay for your free access.

12.  I'm having trouble connecting, is something wrong with the network or server?

The most frequent cause of connection problems is an expired password. Click here for instructions on changing your UST network password.

13. What are my options if I need send or receive an attacment larger than 15MB?

There are a variety of methods that can be used to send or receive documents larger than e-mail attachment limits allow. If you need to transfer files to another UST employee, DeptStore, AcadStore or other file system resources may meet your needs. Another option that will work for both employees and off-campus collaborators is to use an internet file transfer service such as yousendit.com.

Yousendit.com offers secure file transfer with a 2GB limit (well over 100 times the e-mail limit) and is easy to use. IRT is currently investigating offerings such as yousendit.com to determine if this service can be deployed enterprise-wide in an efficient and usable manner.

Please keep in mind the UST faculty and staff should never send confidential or protected personally identifiable information through non-UST systems such as personal e-mail accounts or third-party file movers such as yousendit.com.

14. How can I reduce the amount of spam I receive?

IRT has a service for individuals who would like to decrease the amount of spam they receive.  The Spam Reduction Service which tightens the restrictions on email is avaialble on a "Opt In" basis.  The restrictions will not prevent spam from being sent, but will help keep it from reaching your inbox.

Signing up for the Spam Reduction Service is simple.  Contact the Tech Desk to let them know you want to opt in.

If you don’t want to participate you don’t need to do anything.  Your email account will stay exactly the same.

Just like junk mail received at home, spam cannot be completely stopped without risking blocking legitimate email.  IRT is committed to finding the appropriate balance that is acceptable to the UST community.  If you have questions or comments about the spam reduction service please contact the Tech Desk.
