Spam Reduction Service FAQs

IRT provides a service that offers users an opportunity to "opt in" to a voluntary spam reduction program...

How can I reduce the amount of spam I receive?

IRT has a service for individuals who would like to decrease the amount of spam they receive.  The Spam Reduction Service which tightens the restrictions on email is avaialble on a "Opt In" basis.  The restrictions will not prevent spam from being sent, but will help keep it from reaching your inbox.

Less spam, sounds great– what’s the catch?

Based on testing, this service should reduce the amount of spam coming into your email box.  However it is important to note that it may also block some legitimate emails which have characteristics often found in spam messages.

Keep the good emails coming!

Individuals who opt into the service will receive a daily email listing what has been blocked.  This email is a summary digest of all of the emails that have been blocked since the last time a digest message was received.  This gives individuals a quick and easy way to see what was filtered out as spam.

A nice feature of this email is that it allows individuals the ability to release a message deemed legitimate from being blocked.  If you want to permanently add the email sender to your approved sender list you will still need to add their address in MailMarshal.

Where do I sign up?

Signing up for the Spam Reduction Service is simple.  Contact the Tech Desk to let them know you want to opt in.

If you don’t want to participate you don’t need to do anything.  Your email account will stay exactly the same.

Just like junk mail received at home, spam cannot be completely stopped without risking blocking legitimate email.  IRT is committed to finding the appropriate balance that is acceptable to the UST community.  If you have questions or comments about the spam reduction service please contact the Tech Desk
