Office 365 - Student Advantage

The University of St. Thomas is excited to announce the new Microsoft Student Advantage program.  Because of the University's enterprise agreement with Microsoft, students are able to download and install Microsoft Office365 desktop applications at no additional cost.

Students can install the software on up to five computers, including Windows and Mac. Students can also access Office mobile applications on iPhones and Android phones.

The software has the same features and functions as other versions of Office and can be used offline; however, students must connect to the Internet once every 30 days to verify they are still eligible for the program.

The Student Advantage program is provided by Microsoft in partnership with the University of St. Thomas.

How do I get Microsoft Office for my personal computer?

To begin:


Log in using your UST credentials (use your email as your username (i.e.

For PC users:

  1. On the Get Started Page (below) click on PC & Mac to select the Office version you want to install.
  2. Verify whether you are using 32 or 64-bit Windows: To install the 64-bit version of Office click on the Advanced button next to the Version drop-down box (32-bit will always be recommended).
  3. When you click Install, the installer will download and run.
  4. Click through Next to advance through the steps. You will be asked to agree to Microsoft’s license agreement. Meanwhile the Office suite will install in the background.
  5. You will have the option to change the theme of your Office suite. Pick whatever your heart desires from the menu.
  6. As the background installer progresses you will have the option to take a tour of the suite. If you are unfamiliar with Microsoft Office you should take advantage of this feature.
  7. Once the installer is finished, it will take another minute or two to wrap up the install. You should be able to use the Office suite once it is complete.

*The software should be pre-activated, so there is no need for a product key or activation of any kind.

For MAC users:

  1. On the Get Started Page (below) click on PC & Mac to select the Office version you want to install.
  2. Locate the .dmg file in you downloads and double-click it.
  3. A new window will appear. Double-click the Office Installer folder.
  4. Follow the instructions within the Installer by clicking Continue.
  5. Click continue again under the License section.
  6. Click Install in the Installation Type section.
  7. If your computer is set up to prompt you for administrator credentials, please type them in at this stage.
  8. Wait for Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 to install. Do not shut down your computer.
  9. When installation is complete, you will see this screen. Click Close. You should now see the Microsoft Office icons now in your dock along the bottom of your screen.

How many devices/machines can I run this subscription on?

Each subscription license allows you to run Office on up to five machines being Mac or PC. You can also run Office for iPad on up to 5 tablets.

Our current license only allows users to open files in Office for iPad – you can’t create or edit files in the app that coincides with which application you'd like to use.
For example: Word, Excel, or Powerpoint.

What happens when I graduate and leave UST?

Once you have left the University, your Microsoft Office subscription will end.  You may enroll in other available consumer or commercial offers.

How do I qualify for the student advantage program so that I can install Microsoft Office on my personal computer?

All actively enrolled students qualify. If you are registered for a class you will have access to download and install Microsoft Office.

The program is available to active students.
