Dan Gjelten
Director UST Libraries
Dan is responsible for overall management of the University of St. Thomas Libraries, including O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library on the St. Paul campus, the Charles J. Keffer Library in Minneapolis and the Archbishop Ireland Memorial Library at the St. Paul Seminary.  Dan's professional interest is in leading the academic library through the dramatic transition that is taking place as information resources and user behavior are transformed by the growth in digital resources and network technology.  Dan has taught, lectured and written on library leadership, library design, organizational structure and other topics related to change in the academic library.

Dan has a Bachelor's degree in English and Philosophy from Luther College, a Master's degree in Library Science from the University of Minnesota, and a Master's degree in English from the University of St. Thomas.  He is also a fellow of the Frye Institute (2002) and the ACRL/Harvard Leadership Institute (1999.)  Prior to joining St. Thomas in 1991, he was deputy director of the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library.

With the help of his management team, Dan is responsible for:

  • Leading the staff in collaborative goal setting, decision-making and strategic planning.
  • Participating in the development of collections and services that support the academic mission of the University.
  • Planning and developing an instructional program that introduces and enhances effective use of the contemporary academic library.
  • Developing and supervising an effective communications plan for the libraries.
  • Planning and monitoring the use of the physical facilities of the libraries.
  • Monitoring departmental activities and other human resources issues for libraries' staff.
  • Representing the library to appropriate people outside the organization, campus-wide and regionally.
