Professor Nekima Levy-Pounds of the Community Justice Project writes for the MinnPost about the plight of young black men in Minnesota. "Minnesota’s long-standing reputation as a progressive state may very well be in jeopardy. A look at the statistics surrounding the quality of life for young African-American men point to a picture that is bleak and difficult to ignore. These young men represent fewer than 5 percent of our state population, but are more than 35 percent of our state prison population. They are more likely to have contacts with police and probation officers than college recruiters and job interviewers. They are also more likely to live in prison housing than on college campuses in our state. This has to change."
A presentation by Dr. Tyner inspires Central High School students to action
A presentation by Dr. Tyner entitled Disrupting the School to Prison Pipeline: Research and Recommendations for Creating New Pipelines to Success Workshop on November 8, 2012 inspires Central High School students to action. In the presentation, Dr. Tyner addressed equity issues underlying the disproportionate representation of students of color, in particular African American students, in school disciplinary proceedings and juvenile detention.
Appellate Clinic Students give Oral Argument before the United States Court of Appeals
Chris Motz and Terry Schnurr, third-year students in the Appellate Clinic, will be traveling to San Francisco in April for oral arguments before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Chris and Terry, under the supervision of Professor Greg Sisk, have prepared both opening and reply briefs in Patterson v. Schriro, a case involving a prisoner’s claims of denial of religious liberty rights and medical treatment and adequate nutrition.

Registration now open for How Are The Children? Part VI, Re-Imagining Public Education in Minnesota
In recent years, much attention has been paid to the growing disparities in public education between white children and children of color in our state. For example, according to the Minnesota Department of Education, African American male students lag 30 percentage points or more behind their white counterparts in reading and math proficiency. Students of color are also more likely to be suspended and expelled than their white counterparts. Evidence suggests that numerous factors contribute to these disparities and threaten the future viability of our state, if not addressed with a sense of urgency. Come and learn about ways in which teachers, parents, lawyers, policy makers, community members, and nonprofits, can work collaboratively and proactively to strengthen educational outcomes for all children in Minnesota and transform a crisis into an opportunity for change.

Congratulations to Dr. Tyner 2013 Honoree of the Minnesota African American Heritage Calendar
For the seventh year, the Minnesota African American Heritage Calendar Award Committee a part of the PROCEED Foundation has produced this calendar to showcase the accomplishments of African Americans with roots in Minnesota. The Committee will be recognizing twelve individuals for letting their voices be heard for the shaping of future plans for our community and state. These individuals represent various sources of informational and educational practices to enlighten and inspire others to improve our society. This year’s theme, “Vanguards of Our Legacies” recognizes the honorees’ contributions for setting the tone and facilitating the message for the expectations, hopes and dreams for citizens of African descent as well as for all Minnesotans.

The Power of Pardon: Law Students Advocate for the Incarcerated.
One of the real strengths of St. Thomas’ law school is our clinical program, which gives our students not only real-life experience but also a skill set they will use in practice. One crucial skill for attorneys, for example, is developing the narrative of a client’s experience, and it is that ability which lies at the heart of our new clinic on federal commutation. In the clinic, we appeal to the president to shorten the sentences of our clients by telling their stories through a formal petition.

Brand New Legal Services Clinic Opportunities!
The Legal Services Clinic is delighted to announce that two additional clinic offerings have been recently approved by the Curriculum Committee. Their approval came too late for them to be included in the regular clinic application process. 1L and 2L students are invited to apply for either of these offerings. If you already have been accepted into a clinic for next year, you may apply but upon acceptance into one of these new offerings you would be required to relinquish your position in the clinic into which you have already been accepted.

On March 2, 2012, Professor Virgil Wiebe, Director of the IPC’s Immigration Practice Group, spoke on the topic of “Do current and proposed state and federal immigration policies measure up to the demands of the Gospel?" The presentation, alongside Professor Andrew Yuengert of Pepperdine University, was a part of the Murphy Institute’s “Hot Topics: Cool Talk” series. The series explores both the Catholic positions and some challenging perspectives on major policy issues likely to be the focus of debate in the upcoming 2012 election.

Kingsley Chigbu receives the Student Leadership Award from the School of Social Work
Each year the BSW and MSW faculty from the School of Social Work select a Student Leadership Award for demonstrating: outstanding leadership qualities in social work settings, a commitment to social justice, communicating and interacting effectively in groups and acting from a strong self-concept. The 2010 MSW winner is Kingsley Chigbu. Kingsley was a social work intern at the IPC last year and credited his experience (at the IPC) for laying the foundation that allowed him to be selected for this award. Congratulations Kingsley!
Timothy Flynn Nominated for UST Outstanding Clinic Student of the Year Award
Timothy Flynn has been nominated by the faculty and staff of the Interprofessional Center for the UST Outstanding Clinic Student of the Year award. The award will be officially confirmed by the Association of American Law Schools Section on Clinical Legal Education at its June meeting. The Clinical Section (CLEA) created the award to honor a law student at each law school who has excelled in a clinical course. The award is given annually at the completion of the academic year.

Artika Tyner gets inducted into the Hall of Fame for Highland Park Senior High School. Tyner recieves the award in recognition of her work in furtherance of humanitarian efforts and community building. The highlight of the induction ceremony was the opportunity to address the student body. She was able to encourage each student to achieve their goals and dreams.

New DBT therapy program has taken off for counseling services
The IPC began its first Dialectical Behavior Training (DBT) program in November 2010. The skills group filled up quickly and has had a long waitlist ever since. This therapy is not only popular, it is scientifically sound. In other words, it works.

The Immigration Law Practice Group is honored to collaborate with the New Orleans Workers' Center for Racial Justice (NOWCRJ) in relation to the brutal exploitation of immigrant workers in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Professor Virgil Wiebe testifies regarding HF 358
HF 358 is headed to the MN House Judiciary Committee. The bill is an effort by the majority in the House Public Safety Committee to ban cities from having policies that separate local police duties from federal, civil immigration enforcement.

Professor Nekima Levy-Pounds receives the Shanara Gilbert Emerging Clinician Award
The Executive Committee of the AALS Section on Clinical Legal Education is proud to announce that Professor Nekima Levy-Pounds from University of St. Thomas has won the 2011 Shanara Gilbert Emerging Clinician Award. Professor Levy-Pounds is an Associate Professor of Law and Director of the Community Justice Project at the University of St. Thomas School of Law, where she has taught since 2003.

The Interprofessional Center for Counseling and Legal Services is looking to create a database of volunteer language interpreters and translators to assist in communicating with IPC clients. Interpreting and translating services are needed on an occasional basis in a variety of languages. Students who volunteer may be eligible to receive public service credit for their services.

Kathy Mann Arnott, 'Unsung Legal Hero' in the Interprofessional Center
Kathy Mann Arnott has been selected as an Unsung Legal Hero by Minnesota Lawyer. She is one of only a handful of persons selected in the category of law firm administrators. Kathy has been the administrative nerve center of the Interprofessional Center since before we opened our doors to clients and students in 2003.

Virgil Wiebe, Associate Professor of Law, Co-director of the Interprofessional Center, met with U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar regarding the Cluster Munitions Civilian Protection Act of 2009 that Sen. Klobuchar has vowed to co-sponsor. The bill would restrict the United States’ use of cluster bombs, rendering as many as a half billion stockpiled weapons off-limits.

Immigration and the Arizona Law

Professor Jack Chin of the University of Arizona Law School was the keynote speaker.
