Consumer Bankruptcy Clinic
About the Clinic: The Consumer Bankruptcy Clinic is under the auspices of the Minneapolis office of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP. All client files are held by Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP. Professors Steve Silton and Tom Wallrich launched the Bankruptcy Clinic in the spring of 2010. They are assisted by Professors Joel Nesset and Jamie Pierce. The clinic provides pro bono bankruptcy services to persons financially unable to retain counsel. Clients are referred to the clinic through Volunteer Lawyers Network (VLN). We do not receive self-referrals. The clinic also collaborates with the social work and psychological services programs at University of St. Thomas Interprofessional Center.
For Students: We offer a comprehensive clinical legal program that provides classroom session on bankruptcy law and guidance through one or two practical bankruptcy situations in the representation of real clients. Students practice under the student practice rules of Federal court and under the guidance of local bankruptcy attorneys. Students have appeared in court, and in front of the bankruptcy judges, argued motions, defended depositions, participated in settlement negotiations, and counseled clients on the litigation risks. Jury trials in Bankruptcy Court are a possibility as well.
