Institutional Surveys

Institutional Research & Analysis develops, administers, analyses and disseminates institutional surveys at the University of St. Thomas. These surveys include national surveys (e.g. BCSSE, NSSE, FSSE, CIRP and COACHE) and internal surveys (e.g. Campus Climate Survey, Faculty Advising and Undergraduate Alumni). Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE)

The BCSSE measures entering first-year students' pre-college academic and co-curricular experiences, as well as their interest in and expectation for participating in educationally purposeful activities during college. This survey is designed to be a companion to the National Survey of Student Engagement.

Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE)

The Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) is a consortium of over 160 colleges, universities and systems across North America committed to making the academic workplace more attractive and equitable for faculty. Designed to generate not simply “interesting” data, but actionable diagnoses, COACHE’s suite of faculty job satisfaction surveys have been rigorously tested and continuously improved across multiple administration sites and cycles. Institutional reports and executive dashboards provide enlightened college and university leaders with a powerful lever to increase the quality of work-life for their faculty; to advance a reputation as a great place for faculty to work; to provoke better questions from and more informed decisions by prospective faculty; and to generate ideas and initiatives from faculty that enrich and expand the range of possible improvements.

College Senior Survey (CSS)

The CSS is administered through the CIRP (see below). Senior students participate in the CSS in the Spring semester. Used in conjunction with the CIRP Freshman Survey, the CSS generates valuable longitudinal data on students' cognitive and affective growth during college. It examines the impact of service-learning, leadership development, and student-faculty interactions, as well as assesses a wide variety of instructional practices. The results provide powerful information on how to improve the educational experience for all students.

Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Freshman Survey

The CIRP Freshman Survey is administered by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) at UCLA and is designed to provide comprehensive information on the incoming first-year students. It is used in conjunction with the College Senior Survey (CSS), which provide valuable baseline data for a longitudinal assessment. The results provide information about readiness for college, how students choose colleges, student values and beliefs about diversity and civic engagement, and student expectations.

Faculty Advisor - First Time, First-Year (FTFY)

The FTFY Faculty Advisor Survey is a custom survey administered to all first time, first-year students entering the University of St. Thomas in the fall. The survey is custom designed to answer questions and provide outcomes measures for the Office of Undergraduate Academic Counseling. In addition, this survey is useful to university administrators who wish to measure progress toward identified and measurable goals. The data collected from this survey does not include external benchmarks normally affiliated with nationally organized surveys such as the NSSE and CIRP.

Faculty Advisor - Senior Students

The Senior Faculty Advisor Survey is a custom survey administered to all senior students entering the University of St. Thomas in the fall. Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE)

The FSSE is designed to measure faculty expectations of student engagement in educational practices. It evaluates how faculty members perceive the level of effective student engagement. The survey also collects information about how faculty members spend their time related to professorial activities and the kinds of learning experiences their institution emphasizes.

First-Year Survey (FYS)

The FYS is a custom survey administered to all first time, first-year students entering the University of St. Thomas in the fall. The survey is custom designed to answer questions and provide outcomes measures for programs implemented based on information received from previous BCSSE, NSSE, and CIRP survey administrations. This survey is useful to university administrators who wish to measure progress toward identified and measurable goals. The data collected from this survey does not include external benchmarks normally affiliated with nationally organized surveys such as the NSSE and CIRP.

Graduate Student Survey (GrSS)

The GrSS is a survey administered to graduate students at the University of St. Thomas. This survey is administered in the spring The survey is custom designed to answer questions and provide outcomes measures related to graduate programs. The data collected from this survey does not include external benchmark data normally affiliated with nationally organized surveys such as the NSSE and CIRP.

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)

First Time, First-Year and senior students are invited to participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). The purpose of this survey is to obtain information about student participation in programs and activities provided for their learning and personal development. NSSE survey results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from their experiences as well as their views about the quality of their education.

Senior Survey (SS)

The SS is a custom survey administered to all graduating senior students at the University of St. Thomas during the spring semester. The survey is custom designed to answer questions and provide outcomes measures for programs implemented based on information received from previous NSSE and SOS survey administrations. This survey is useful to university administrators who wish to measure progress toward identified and measurable goals. Service Learning Pre & Post Assessment (SL)

The Office of Institutional Research and Analysis partners with the Office for Service-Learning to collect information from undergraduate students enrolled in a service-learning course requiring participation in a service-learning project.

Student Outcomes Survey (SOS)

The SOS is an American College Testing, Inc. survey. This survey is administered to all graduating senior students at the University of St. Thomas during the spring semester. The survey is designed to answer questions and provide outcomes measures for programs implemented based on information received from previous NSSE and SS survey administrations. This survey is useful to university administrators who wish to measure progress toward identifiable and measurable goals. The data collected from this survey includes external benchmark data normally affiliated with nationally organized surveys such as the NSSE and CIRP.

Undergraduate Alumni Survey (1, 5, 10 yr)

The UG Alumni Survey is a post graduation survey project of the Office of Instutitional Research and Analysis and Career Services. The survey is administered to students who have recently graduated at the Baccalaureate level from the University of St. Thomas. It provides accurate and useful information to students, faculty, staff, administration, and the community about the post-graduation activities of undergraduate students from the University of St. Thomas. The information includes details about student employment and education.
