Guide to Student Pay Rates

Student pay rates on campus will vary depending on position type.  The pay rate for each job is determined based on the duties and qualifications of the position.  Technical positions, or positions which require a higher level of knowledge and give a higher level of responsibility, constitute a higher pay rate.  Based on the position type (i.e. regular, academic or technical), pay rate information and a complete explanation of each level is provided below.  Human Resources can assist in rating the position during the posting process.

Student Pay Rates Regular Grid

Here you will find the academic year regular pay rates effective September 5, 2012.  The descriptions for each level are listed first and the pay rates that correspond are listed in the grid below.

Level 1
Entry Level:  Little or no prior experience required.  Duties carried out according to straightforward and standardized policies/procedures.  Under direct supervision by manager, work consists of frequently repeated tasks that are closely related, clear cut, and unvarying from day to day.

Level 2
2nd level in a series:  Requires some prior experience or training.  Work consists of situations or duties requiring interpretation of standard policies and procedures to be able to recommend the appropriate course of action.  Some independent judgment is expected.

Level 3
3rd level in a series:  Requires advanced training, certification or significant prior experience.  Work consists of more diverse duties requiring independent judgment in interpreting and selecting alternative courses of action.  AND/OR  Guides and directs the work of others as a Lead Worker.  May include staffing/scheduling, assigning work, and orienting/educating students.

Undergraduate and Graduate Internship - Level 4
This level requires that the position be set up as an Internship where it is required that the student perform work that is directly related to their major course of study and is a junior or above in their studies.  This position should be working with a supervisor who will serve as a mentor throughout the internship.  Work assigned should be of a level that is higher than a regular student position, typically project work which will allow for learning opportunities.

Academic Student Positions Job Evaluation and Pay Tool

Level 1 - $8.00
Students in first or second year of school typically majoring in or taking classes in the field they work in.  Must have a solid background and understanding of material/subject area.  Assistants work under direct supervision.

Level 2 - $8.50
Students have previous experience as and/or are typically majoring in or taking classes in the field they work in.  Must have a solid background and understanding of material/subject area.  Assistants work under supervisor direction.

Level 3 - $9.00
Students have previous experience as a Level 2 and/or are typically majoring in or taking classes in the field they work in.  Must have an extensive background and understanding of material/subject area.  Ability to work independently.

Level 4 - $9.50 - $11.00
Students have experience at Level 3 and/or have advanced knowledge in the field they work in.  Ability to work independently.

Technical Student Positions Job Evaluation and Pay Tool

Level 1 - $8.00
Perform entry-level duties with basic knowledge of pc’s and operating systems.  Work under direct supervision.

Level 2 - $8.50
Perform basic problem solving, helping with programming fundamentals, installations.  Assist with first level computer installations, keeping software packages and computer equipment working properly.  Familiar with two programming languages and/or previous related work experience and/or have completed related course work.  Work under supervisor direction.

Level 3 - $9.00
Higher level of problem solving and able to assist clients and staff with variety of software and hardware platforms.  Assists with installations, troubleshooting and supporting software and computer equipment.  Familiar with two or more programming languages, previous related experience and/or have completed related course work.  Ability to work independently.

Level 4 - $9.50 - $11.00
Provides support for at least 8 including 4 advanced software packages or technical areas.  Keeps labs running smoothly, assists with installations, troubleshooting and supporting software and computer equipment.  Solid troubleshooting skills and experience handling common network and software problems.  Ability to work independently and assist clients with projects.

Level 5 - $11.50 - $13.00
Assist with configuring, testing and using/maintaining some of UST’s most complex computing resources.  Provide course assistance and consulting.  Have solid troubleshooting skills, experience handling network, software and hardware problems.  NOTE: Undergrads cannot exceed this level.

Level 6 - $13.50 - $15.75
As a graduate student performs the more complex specialist level work as described in Level 5 above.  Requires significant work experience in the specialty area in which they are working.
