| The Water Safety and Lifegaurd course is designed to develop the skills and knowledge needed to plan and teach swimming in public and private schools according to the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program and to prepare learners to become certified as an American Red Cross Lifeguard. This course provides entry-level lifeguard participants with certification to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services personnel arrive. Prerequisite: There are no prerequisite courses or test scores required, however, students must be able to swim six strokes (front crawl: 25 yds., back crawl: 25 yds., breaststroke: 25 yds., elementary backstroke: 25 yds., sidestroke: 25 yds., and butterfly: 15 yds.) and also be able to float for one minuteon the back in deep water (floating and sculling) and tread water in deep water for one minute at the American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim Level 4 ability.
