How to Earn Multiple Majors
Students and alumni of a Graduate Programs in Software Master of Science (MS) degree program are allowed to double or triple major in software engineering, software management, and information technology.
For current GPS students, GPS will add an additional major to a student’s program upon his/her request. The student will have to complete all the general requirements for the MS degree plus all requirements specific to each additional major chosen. Courses common to each major will count toward each additional major. Upon completion of all requirements for the MS degree AND each major requested, the University of St. Thomas will award the student a single MS degree. The St. Thomas transcript will list a single MS degree and each major. The student will receive a single diploma for the MS degree from St. Thomas. The St. Thomas diploma will list a single major – the student must choose which major (software engineering, software management, or information technology) s/he wants to appear on the diploma.
For GPS alumni, the student will return as a non-degree student with a second (or third) major. (MS in software engineering alumni may return earn an additional major in software management or information technology. MS in software management alumni may return to earn an additional major in software engineering or information technology. MS in information technology alumni may return to earn an additional major in software engineering or software management.) When the student completes the requirements for the additional major, the University of St. Thomas will note on the transcript that the student has completed the requirements for that major. The additional major will be added to the transcript, but St. Thomas will not post another degree nor give the student a second diploma.
In all cases completion of an MS degree with multiple majors in software engineering, software management, and information technology will require the student to take more classes than if s/he had a single major. The number of extra classes taken will depend on when the student decides on this option and how many classes s/he has already completed.
