Graduate School of Professional Psychology

Founded in 1885, the University of St. Thomas is a Catholic, diocesan university based in the Twin Cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis with over 10,000 students.  The largest private university in Minnesota, St. Thomas offers bachelor's degrees in over 85 major fields of study and more than 45 graduate degree programs, including master's, education specialist, juris doctor and doctorates.       
Located on the Minneapolis campus of the University of St. Thomas, the Graduate School of Professional Psychology offers the Master of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degrees in counseling psychology. The school is committed to an educational process that addresses the diverse needs of students through a variety of learning strategies designed to create a supportive and challenging environment within the university.

The professional psychology programs focus on training students in counseling psychology by teaching clinical skills within the framework of ethical practice.  The M.A. developed in the mid 1970's and the Psy.D., initiated in 1990, provide practitioner-scholar oriented education for professionals serving the public and private mental health fields.  The Psy.D. program was accredited by the American Psychological Association in October 2000.

Mission

The Graduate School of Professional Psychology is dedicated to access and excellence in education, training and professional development using the Practitioner-Scholar Model. Graduates are grounded in the best practices of the Counseling Psychology profession, models of research appropriate for practicing psychologists and counselors and ethical decision making.

The Graduate School of Professional Psychology seeks to guide students in their professional development using core values which emphasize intellectual curiosity and flexibility; scientific skepticism; open-mindedness; psychological health; belief in the capacity for change; appreciation of individual and cultural diversity; interest, courage and compassion in providing human services, especially in under served populations; personal integrity and honesty; capacity of developing interpersonal skills including empathy, respect for others, and personal relatedness; and, self-awareness.
