Northern Minnesota contains a fabulous patchwork of sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks. On this trip, students enrolled in Fundamentals of the Lithosphere I (GEOL 340) practice their rock identification and field note-taking skills to interpret past events and environments of our state. We also go underground at Tower Soudan mine to study the rocks that help(ed) drive our economy and build our state. Minnesota once had volcanoes, oceans and huge mountains. Our rocks tell us this story and students learn how to "read the history book".
