Student Employment at UST

On-campus student employment is a common part of financial aid awards at the University of St. Thomas. St. Thomas students earn in excess of $3 million in a combination of federal, state and university funds annually.

Work-study employees benefit themselves by offsetting their cost of attendance while simultaneously providing valuable services to the St. Thomas community and gaining experience for future employment.

Types of Work-Study

There are two types of work-study on campus: need-based and non-need-based.

Eligibility for need-based work-study is determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and can be awarded using either federal or state funds.

Students who are not awarded need-based funding qualify for non-need-based student employment. There is no application necessary to be eligible for these funds.

Finding a Job

Students can apply for any posted position on campus. When choosing an on-campus job, students should keep in mind their skills, interests and course load.

On-campus employment includes (but is not limited to) positions such as library staff, tutors, research assistants, science lab technicians, food service workers, Residence Life assistants, administrative aids and bookstore employees.

St. Thomas also works in conjunction with several non-profit agencies to provide off-campus, community service positions for recipients of federal or state work-study awards.

Jobs are available on a first-come, first-served basis so students are advised to start their job search early. Priority for on-campus positions is given to qualified students who have been awarded need-based, federal or state work-study.

Being awarded work-study funding is not guarantee of a job and each student is ultimately responsible for finding a position on campus that works with his/her schedule.

Available positions are posted on the University of St. Thomas Human Resources web page and can viewed by selecting the "Student" link on this web page.

Required Paperwork for Employment

Before a student begins work, they must complete a Student Employment Form to establish his/her placement with a department. This form is available on Murphy Online under the Student Services tab. When students login to complete the Student Employment Form, other required paperwork (if applicable) will also be listed.
