The University of St. Thomas

Application Process

Application Process for Current Students

To receive a financial aid award from the University of St. Thomas, you must complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the federal processor. After we receive the results of your FAFSA, we will notify you of your aid eligibility.

Remember: The priority date for applying for financial aid for the upcoming academic year is April 1 of the current academic year.

Please contact our office if you have any questions about the application process.

FAFSA

You can file your FAFSA online via the U.S. Department of Education Web site. The FAFSA on the Web application collects the same information as the paper version.

In subsequent years the information from your prior year's FAFSA is pre-populated when you begin the online process.  This saves you time and means that you will only enter data that has changed from the prior year (primarily income information).

Before you can complete a FAFSA electronically, you and your parent (if applicable) must request and receive a Personal Identification Number (PIN) from the U.S. Department of Education. If you remember your PIN, you do not need to request it again. To request your PIN go to http://www.pin.ed.gov.

We recommend you gather the following documents to assist you when filing your FAFSA:

  • Your most recent Federal Income Tax Returns and W-2 statements
  • Current bank statements
  • Records of stocks, bonds and other investments
  • Any other records pertaining to earned income or assets

We strongly encourage you to complete your FAFSA online.

Paper FAFSA

The U.S. Department of Education recommends applicants file electronically. Beginning with the 2008-2009 school year, paper FAFSAs will no longer be sent to schools to distribute to students. Paper applications will also not be automatically sent to students who have filed a paper FAFSA previously.

If you would like to file a paper FAFSA, you must call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243 to request a paper application be mailed to you.
