Two Summer Seminars this Summer!
2011 Faculty Development Summer Seminars
This summer, Faculty Development will be offering two seminars on the topics below, as they had the highest votes in the faculty survey. You can apply for both seminars; however, priority for acceptance in each seminar will be given to faculty who select a given seminar as 1. Whether or not you attend the Faculty Writers Workshop will have no bearing on your acceptance in either of these summer seminars. Look for email registration forms in your email boxes soon. They will include more detailed information on each seminar.
Faculty Development Summer Seminar--Connecting Food and our Curriculum
June 13-16, with optional 4th day on Service Learning
Led by Elise Amel (Psychology) and Tim Scully (CoJo)
This seminar will focus on food from the ground up. Looking locally, we faculty (and our students) will explore new ways of thinking about food, including community gardens, food deserts, nutrition education and healthcare issues such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease that are becoming crises in America. We also will explore sustainable systems in our communities at UST and in the Twin Cities. We will be inspired by speakers from local organizations and field trips to gardens and farms. Plan on adding a food-related project to a fall syllabus.
Blended Course Design
Led by Jason Rhode (University of Northern Illinois)
This is a reprise of the popular seminar from last summer. Participants will learn how to incorporate online learning into an existing course. The seminar will explore the advantages of blended learning through pedagogical options, tools for meaningful communication, and ways of successful assessment of student participation and work. We will focus on sound instructional principles and technologies for online teaching and learning and discuss how to make blended learning successful. Staff from the Faculty Center for eLearning will offer assistance to participants as they revise part of a course.
