Summer Writing Opportunities
For your scholarship: On-Campus Writers’ Retreat

The Center for Writing and Faculty Development will be offering a 1 week on-campus retreat for faculty to make substantial progress on their writing projects from June 21-25. The retreat will provide a quiet space on campus where you can establish your individual workspace and write among other focused, productive faculty. Participants will bring all materials needed for their projects (including laptops if they’d like), and spread out for the week at tables in a room which will be secured at the end of the day. This is not an opportunity for research; in fact, you’ll need to refrain from accessing the Internet or your email so that you can focus exclusively on writing and revising.
For a brief time each morning, the group will convene and individuals will describe specific goals for that day. We’ll write until lunch and then break to eat and socialize. At the end of the day, participants will reflect on their progress and report to the group. You’ll have access to resources on writing in the Center for Writing including individual consultations with the director, Dr. Susan Callaway (who will be writing as well). At the end of the week we’ll take time to report and reflect, and especially to celebrate our accomplishments and devise ways for us to sustain our productivity throughout the summer months.
The Center for Writing and Faculty Development hope to offer on-campus retreats at least twice a year for all faculty and staff—one in summer and one in January term. We are particularly interested in supporting new and junior faculty, but all are welcome to register. Look for registration information on email.
For your Teaching: Writing Across the Curriculum Seminar
Led by Dr. Chris Anson
June 7-11, 2010 9 a.m.-noon
Application deadline: Tuesday, April 6, 2010
Each participant receives a $500 stipend upon submission of revised and annotated course materials.
Internationally-recognized Writing Across the Curriculum specialist Chris Anson has agreed to return for our third WAC seminar. He will cover the following topics:
- What does it mean to approach writing as a process as well as a product
- What is the relationship of writing to thinking?
- How can writing be used as a tool for learning subject matter and for critical thinking?
- What are effective ways to plan, present, sequence, and assess both formal and informal writing assignments?
- What are helpful and efficient ways to respond to student writing?
After three hours of presentation and discussion, participants will have the afternoon to work on their courses and to consult individually with Chris Anson.
Please contact WAC Director Erika Scheurer by Tuesday, April 6 at firstname.lastname@example.org and include the following information:
- Your name and department.
- The name and number of the course you would like to revise (it must be an undergraduate course).
- Whether you will revise the course to be Writing Intensive, Writing to Learn, or Writing in the Disciplines (please see attached descriptions).
- Please briefly describe how you currently use writing in the course and your goals for participating in the seminar.
