Found Wisdom: Dead Ideas in Teaching

Diane Pike Augsburg
Dr. Diane Pike, Augsburg

We're excited to welcome Diane Pike from Augsburg on Oct. 18 to speak in our Rethinking Assessment series.  She's the author of a great article published originally in The Sociological Quarterly, "The tyranny of dead ideas in teaching and learning," which is excerpted below.  The article was a 2012 finalist for the annual Teaching and Learning Award from The Teaching Professor organization, and it's easy to see why.  In this excerpt, Pike articulates three "dead ideas" that continue to animate beyond the grave our conversations about students and teaching.  Then she challenges us to re-think them.  Read it and consider what other dead ideas might be haunting your thoughts about the classroom.
