David Yearwood on “Using Technology for Connection, Engagement and Empowerment in your Classrooms”

Last year at the Teaching Professor conference—a major national pedagogical conference—a fascinating keynote was given by Dr. David Yearwood. He spoke of the misuse of technologies in the classroom and suggested ways that “electronic pedagogy,” as he calls it, could be used to better connect with, engage and empower students. He posed this question to us: “There is no denying the allure, widespread fascination, and acceptance of modern technologies, but to what extent are educators employing reasoned and rational approaches in the selection and use of educational tools to enhance their work with students?” His keynote was the talk of the conference, and referenced in many other presentations there.
We are lucky to have Dr. Yearwood present a day of electronic pedagogy for UST faculty on January 24, 2011. The workshop will last from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., with a break for lunch. He will, in his unique way of challenging and encouraging, discuss the pedagogical uses of various web tools and elicit discussion from participants as to the pro’s and con’s for their classes. Not only will he model best practices, but participants will get a chance to learn a tool that might be useful in their classes.
This workshop is geared toward those faculty who have minimal experience with technology in teaching, and is also meant as a follow-up to the 2010 summer seminar on Blended Course Design. This workshop will focus more on the pedagogical aspects of technology.

Yearwood’s workshop will be followed by a week of practical workshops for hands-on learning of various technical tools, taught by UST’s eLearning staff.
Dave Yearwood, Ph.D., CSTM is an Associate Professor and chair of the Technology Department at the University of North Dakota. Yearwood has been teaching in higher education for 21 years and his experience reaches across two academic tracks—Technology and Teaching, as well as Higher Education. Yearwood’s study of instructional technology in higher education is focused primarily on how faculty infuse presentation or other technologies into their practice to connect and engage learners, enhance students’ understanding of course content, and find ways to promote dialogue among a community of learners that leads to a critical examination of topics/subjects under examination. Yearwood has conducted numerous faculty development workshops at public/private colleges and universities and at national conferences on the use of classroom technology to facilitate purposeful learning. He was presented with the outstanding teacher award in the College of Business and Public Administration (CoBPA) on two different occasions; he also earned the coveted teaching, service, and scholarship award (CoBPA); and was nominated at the university level for outstanding graduate and undergraduate teaching awards. In 2009 Yearwood was one of four professors recognized nationally by the Association of Technology, Management and Applied Engineering (ATMAE)—a professional association for technology and technology management professionals and students—as Outstanding Professor in the areas of teaching, research, and service. Dr. Yearwood is a native of St. Vincent and the Grenadines—an island in the Caribbean.
