Publishing a book represents, for many faculty, the ultimate scholarly challenge. In fact, the prestige surrounding book publishing may be so intimidating that it prevents faculty from even drafting a proposal, let alone approaching prospective publishers. In this workshop, Stephen Brookfield will draw on his experience as an author and editor of 18 books to outline the main elements of a book proposal.

Stephen will talk about the process of approaching publishers and writing a preliminary proposal.  He will bring examples of some of his successful book proposals to distribute to participants and outline the chief steps in preparing a proposal. Faculty are encouraged to bring ideas or specific questions to discuss with Stephen.

Workshop Facilitator: Dr. Stephen Brookfield is Distinguished University Professor and Ireland Endowed Chair at St. Thomas. He has written, co-written or edited eighteen books on adult learning, teaching, critical thinking, discussion methods and critical theory, six of which have won the Cyril O. Houle World Award for Literature in Adult Education (in 1986, 1989, 1996, 2005, 2011 and 2012). He also won the 1986 Imogene Okes Award for Outstanding Research in Adult Education (AAACE) and the Philip E. Frandson Award for Literature in Continuing Higher Education, (2013) awarded by the University Professional Continuing Education Association, (UPCEA). His work has been translated into German, Korean, Finnish, Chinese, Japanese, Polish, Farsi, and Albanian.
