Mortgage Fraud: Its Victims, Consequences, and Remedies

Update: 70 Volunteers Placed in Projects to Address the Mortgage Crisis Assist

Around 70 students have been referred to projects through the mortgage fraud training held on January 22nd. Of those, about 30 were referred to the database project and the remaining 40 were referred to specific placements with LASM, SMRLS, VLN, FRLP, LCSJ and the Equity Stripping Taskforce.

Over 125 Volunteers Attend Mortgage Fraud Training

On January 22, a Holloran Center sponsored training session was conducted by seven organizations for more than 125 volunteers  willing to help victims of mortgage fraud and others dealing with the subprime lending crisis. This was a wonderful response to the Mortgage Fraud Public Forum held on November 8, 2007 featuring mortgage fraud victims and organizations seeking to help them.

The Minnesota Lawyer published an article on the turnout for the session. The Minnesota Lawyer Blog also published an entry here.

Mortgage Fraud Forum

The event focused on what Minnesotans, including members of the legal community, can do to help individuals affected by mortgage fraud. As part of the forum, several mortgage fraud victims shared their stories and several organizations discussed how everyone, including law students and lawyers, can get involved in being part of the solution.

Hank Shea of the Holloran Center made a joint presentation at the forum with Kristine Kelly, a former real estate mortgage broker from South Carolina, who was convicted of mortgage fraud and recently finished serving a 16 month term of federal imprisonment.

St. Thomas School of Law Associate Professor Nekima Levy Pounds and Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Dixon, head of the federal Mortgage Fraud Task Force in Minnesota, served as moderators for the forum's two panels.

The forum included the following organizations committed to helping victims of mortgage fraud:

Housing Preservation Project: Foreclosure Relief Law Project (FRLP)
