A commentary written by graduate English student alumni, Corey Hickner-Johnson '12, was recently published in the Star Tribune Corey's commentary was about Sarah Wakefield--the subject of her master's essay--and was written as a response to the recent series that the Star Tribune ran on the 150th anniversary of the U.S.-Dakota War. Wakefield was captured during the Dakota War and later went on to defend Chaska and his family. Hickner-Hohnson argues in her larger master's essay that Wakefield hijacks the acceptable form of women's captivity narrative to lay claim to a voice in the political narrative being fashioned by white men in the aftermath of the 1862 war.
