We think of China as a 21st-century economic superpower, but what do we know of the 20th-century forces and events that have shaped today's China: the Chinese civil war, the Japanese invasion, the 1949 Communist victory, the Great Leap Forward, the Great Cultural Revolution, events at Tiananmen Square, and Reform and Opening? The fiction, memoir, journalism, and poetry we read in this class will open doors into the complex lives and rich cultures of the Chinese people who both shaped and endured these momentous events, deepening our understanding of the world's most populous country. The writing load for this course is a minimum of 15 pages of formal revised writing. Prerequisite: ENGL 121.
