4 Credit Hours
This course will explore the influence of jazz music and culture in poetry, both as a source of content and as an informant of craft. We will study the relationship of improvisation and collaboration in contemporary poetry, and whether these values have shaped a distinctly "American" brand of poetry. The reading list will likely include Allen Ginsburg, Jack Spicer, Yusef Komunyakaa, Sonia Sanchez, Jayne Cortez, and Joshua Marie Wilkinson, and there will also be a significant music listening portion. The writing load will consist of 15 pages of formal revised writing, and will include a close poetry explication and an independently designed research project.
