Wonder—is not precisely knowing
And not precisely knowing not—
A beautiful but bleak condition
He has not lived who has not felt—
       --excerpted from Poem #1347

To close out National Poetry Month, the English Department will host a marathon reading of Emily Dickinson's poems. The goal will be to read aloud all of Dickinson’s poems — from #1 to #1,789 — between 8 a.m. and about 9-10 p.m. Readers may come and go as they please, staying for a half-hour or making a day of it. Participants will sit in a circle and take turns reading; listeners are welcome too.

Readers don't need to bring anything, as several copies of the complete collection of Dickinson's poems will be available to pick up and leave throughout the day.

Over 200 readers--students, faculty, staff, administrators, members of the public--are expected to take a turn with a poem, and you can join them. Even if you’re pretty busy, remember: Dickinson’s poems are very short, so reading one could take less than a minute!

This event is sponsored by the Department of English, the O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library, and the Luann Dummer Center for Women. Questions about this marathon reading can be addressed to Dr. Erika Scheurer at ecscheurer@stthomas.edu.
