"What can I do with my English major?" or "What have other students from the graduate program gone on to do afterwards?"
are questions that our students frequently ask us. One of the best sources of information that we have for answering these questions comes from our English alumni who keep in touch with us in two major ways: maintaining email contact with
individual faculty members or through news updates submitted to our free Writing in the Margins department newsletter via our english@stthomas.edu or gradenglish@stthomas.edu email accounts. We can't emphasize how much we enjoy hearing from you and passing on news of your success to others!
Writing in the Margins is sent out in May and December to all undergraduate and graduate English alumni from 1980 to the present. If you graduated with an English degree from St. Thomas within that period but aren't getting our department newsletter, please let us know so that we can add you to our department mailing list. Full-text versions of our past newsletters are also available on the English Department web site. We also strongly encourage you to register for The Quad, the searchable and secure St. Thomas alumni directory.
We occasionally host events for undergraduate students that involve English alumni, such as our "What Can You Do with an English Major" session, typically offered in the spring. If you live in the Twin Cities area and are willing to share your experiences about life outside of the St. Thomas arches with current English students, please let us know--we're always looking for alumni volunteers! In addition, if you are willing to talk to students on a one-to-one basis in an informational interview setting about your career, the job search process, or other general job-related questions, we urge you to register yourself as a professional on the St. Thomas Career Information Network web site, run by the Career Development Center, or as a mentor for the Take a Tommy to Lunch program, sponsored by the Alumni Assocation. We're thankful for anything you are willing to give back to our students!
