A Liberal Arts education adds a special dimension and perspective to an engineer's problem solving skills. It takes more than just theory to transform an idea into a useful technology for our society. One must be able to champion an idea with effective communication and a deep appreciation for the people, perceptions, policies, and business environment which will ultimately define the success of the technology.
Presently, nearly 600 students at the University of St. Thomas are engaged in our undergraduate Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering programs. We are best known for our effective teaching, personal advising, hands on experience in the classroom, student-faculty research and industry sponsored internships and projects for our students. All are reasons why, nearly 1 in 10 new freshmen at the University of St. Thomas enroll in engineering.
We know that the development and adoption of critical technologies in energy, transportation, medicine, environment, food and water resources will not come to pass with a singular focus on the science alone. The best solutions require a broad understanding of society and the political environment in which these technologies must endure. The Liberal Arts education gives the St. Thomas engineer the power to see these other dimensions to problems and interact directly with many types of people to solve some of our most pressing needs.
