Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering

Program Overview: 

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering combines the study of sciences, general engineering, design engineering and civil engineering with the study of liberal arts.

To meet the needs of the School of Engineering’s constituents, as represented by the External Advisory Board, and to develop programs that prepare students to attain the goals expressed by the mission statement, the program has developed the following Program Educational Objectives.

Graduates of the University of St. Thomas Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering program are expected to achieve one or more of the following:

  • Create with Engineering Skills: Use civil, design, materials, fluids, hydraulic, hydrologic, structural, geotechnical, transportation, construction, surveying and environmental principles to create systems, infrastructure, structures, and services that meet needs of people, improve the quality of their lives, and use resources wisely.

  • Grow in a Learning Profession: Increase personal knowledge and skill through graduate or professional study, appropriate certifications, and work assignments.

  • Contribute through Citizenship: Contribute time, knowledge, and skills to the profession, community, and the world.

  • Lead through One's Work: Serve as a team member or team leader, demonstrating ethical behavior, social sensitivity, and professional responsibility.

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Student Outcomes:

  • An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering

  • An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data

  • An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability

  • An ability to function on multidisciplinary teams

  • An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems

  • An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility

  • An ability to communicate effectively

  • The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context

  • A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning

  • A knowledge of contemporary issues

  • An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
