Careers in Engineering

Engineering has been called the "invisible profession" or the "stealth profession" because most people have no clue what engineers do. This is unfortunate, because everything in society is linked to engineering.

A 1998 poll indicated 61% of adults felt "not very well" or "not at all well" informed about engineering. This web site aims to change that statistic. If you surf your way through this site, you'll know way more about engineers and engineering than most adults. You might even decide that you want to become an engineer.global engineer

Engineers also help people learn more about who they are and what they do during National Engineers Week.

A really broad but short definition of engineering is:

"Engineering is the application of math and science to create something of value from our natural resources."

UST Career Development Center

The Career Development Center serves all undergraduate students with their vocational and career learning. We assist students in the process of choosing a major, identifying career options, providing career assessments, developing skills needed for internship and employment searches, and considerations for graduate education. Go to http://www.stthomas.edu/careerdevelopment/ for more information.

The Career Development Center offers an On-Campus Interviewing Program at the beginning of each fall and spring semesters for juniors and seniors seeking internships and full-time career positions.

How Do I Find a Job or Internship?

Students sometimes wonder what is involved in the process of finding engineering internships. This planning document describes some of the resources available to get you started down this path of discovery.

Here is a list of "Favorite Questions" used in engineering job interviews that will help you prepare for an interview.

Most companies will post open jobs (intern or full time) on the UST career development website. A number of local companies have engineering job openings that are only posted on their company website.  Here is a partial list of these organizations that UST Engineering is aware of at this time.

"Meet the Engineers of the Future" Annual Event

Each fall, the School of Engineering sponsors a reverse job fair for all our students who wish to participate. The engineering students prepare a resume and a display and are each assigned to a table.  Then potential employers come to to meet our students--potential
engineers of the future.  Please go to Events for more information.
